From the street, a security door and a storm door can look alike. They’re built for different purposes, though, and picking the wrong one is a common mistake.

What a storm door does

A storm door is a lightweight outer door, usually aluminum with glass or screen panels. Its job is to protect your main door from weather, let in light, and let air through when you open the glass or screen. It adds convenience, but it isn’t designed to resist forced entry.

What a security door does

A security door is built from heavier steel or iron with a reinforced frame, strong mesh or bars, and a lock designed to resist force. Its main job is to keep people out while letting you leave your main door open for airflow and light.

Why installation matters

A strong door is only as strong as how it’s mounted. A security door must be anchored properly to the frame and wall, or it can be pried off. This is one reason custom fabrication often outperforms a one-size-fits-all door from a big-box store, especially on older homes where doorframes aren’t standard.

Don’t forget safe exit

Security doors should always be easy for you to open from the inside, especially in an emergency. Ask your installer about the lock and latch design, and check with your local building department about requirements for your home.

Which should you choose?

Choose a storm door if you mainly want weather protection and a bit of extra light. Choose a security door if safety is a priority or you like leaving your door open for fresh air. Some homeowners want both: a security door that also looks good.
