How Arizona Summer Heat Affects Iron Gates
Extreme Glendale heat can warp gates, wear hinges, and fade paint. Learn what to watch for and how to protect your iron gate all summer.

When temperatures in Glendale sit above 110°F for weeks, your iron gate is working harder than you realize. Metal expands in heat and contracts as it cools, and a gate that swings dozens of times a day feels every degree of it. The good news is that heat damage is usually gradual, so you can catch it early.
Expansion and alignment
Steel grows slightly as it heats up. On a well-built gate this is invisible, but on an older gate or one with tight tolerances it can cause the latch to stop lining up with the strike plate, the gate to rub the post or the ground, or sliding gates to bind in the track. If your gate latches fine at 7 a.m. and sticks at 4 p.m., heat expansion is the likely cause.
Hinges and rollers
Hinges, rollers, and openers take the most abuse. Heat dries out lubricants faster, and dust gets pulled into any grease that’s left. Check hinges for squeaking, grinding, or a gate that has started to sag, because sag puts extra strain on the post and the weld points. Sliding gates should have their tracks cleared of grit and debris regularly.
Paint and powder coat
Arizona sun breaks down finishes through UV exposure and surface heat. Look for chalky, faded areas, bubbling, and chips. Bare steel starts to rust quickly once the coating is breached, even in a dry climate, especially where sprinklers hit the gate or at the base near the ground. Dark colors absorb more heat, so keep this in mind when choosing a finish.
A simple summer checklist
Open and close the gate in the afternoon heat and note any rubbing or sticking
Inspect hinges, rollers, and latches for wear and clean off dust
Look for chips and rust spots, and touch them up promptly
Check that posts are solid and the gate hangs level
Keep sprinklers from spraying directly on the metal
When to call a pro
Sagging, cracked welds, a gate that no longer closes on its own, or rust that has eaten into the metal are repair jobs, not touch-ups. A quick fix now is almost always cheaper than replacing a damaged gate later.
